I know this is vague and I apologise - it is a chilhood memory. I read a children's novel about about a black cat who I think was called carponel, carbonel... it was a magical sort of book where the cats could speak... anyone know it? Ive love to get hold of it again.

its Carbonel -The King of the Cats
Barbara Sleigh

No wonder this book has been loved by countless children over the years. It is just delightful. I loved every page, and was sorry when the story ended. There is something about British children's book writers -- they seem to have a special key into the realms of magic and a unique talent for making worlds of wonder real and accessible to readers. Who can resist loving Carbonel, the displaced king of all cats, and Rosemary and John, the children who help him regain his dominion?

An old lady at the market persuades Rosemary to buy Carbonel, along with a second-rate broom. But the old lady is really a witch who wants to retire, and her ordinary looking black cat is of high royal blood. The witch has placed Carbonel under a spell, and it is up to Rosemary and John to help the cat break free and recover his throne. Carbonel communicates with the children via the broom. Whenever they hold the broom, they can hear and understand what he is saying. Rosemary and John have to put up with Carbonel's haughty ways, do some very clever sleuthing, and brave riding on the rickety old broom across the city before they solve the mystery of their feline friend.
