Hi Kristin...generally, it is isn't legal unless you're a licenced rehabilitator then it's the exception. All native animals are not supposed to be kept as pets for various laws mandated by each state, county or city. Any of your local wildlife rescues can elaborate more on why as it is a lengthy explanation to write all out on Yahoo Answers.

I really don't know about the laws on squirrels in New York, but I am glad it is a curiosity thing. I had a squirrel once ... long story, but it was orphaned and my daughter thought it needed a mommy. . . her mommy. They don't housebreak. 'Nuf said.

Did you know that a cute little squirrel is actually related to a rat? I wouldn't think of feeding peanuts to a rat, yet I feed squirrels. Hmmmm. . .

It is illegal to own any wild animal. Unless you have special permits like for a rehab for "wildlife center", or work in a related field. But it is after all a petty law, unless you have a pet moose or tiger. I have been the "keeper" of a few raccoons in my time, and never had law enforcement issues.
