Why do people called William get called Bill?

Well its like this All Richards are Dicks and All Robs are Bob Knobs and Well Will Bills! Lets don't go there!!...lol... So that's Why...!!!?????

It's just a shortening for Richard, there's a lot of older guys out there that are called **** instead of Richard.

well i have never heard the richard/dick one, but the bill/william has always confused me. i went to school with 2 williams and we called them "wil" for short.
