Myspace is not made for kids in the first place. It can be safe, but the people using it have to WANT to be safe! If a kid makes a profile and sets it to private, makes sure that they only talk to other kids they know like from their school, then they can be safe on myspace. BUT, there are a lot of kids that don't want to be "safe" on myspace. They think it is cool to pretend to be older, to talk to strangers, to cause trouble and talk crap about people in their public blogs to piss people off. Kids who act like that are just an accident waiting to happen. If 12 year olds are on myspace pretending to be 21, and talking to creepy older people, then they have a chance of getting involved in some dangerous stuff. Myspace isn't for little kids. If a kid wants to set up a myspace the kids PARENTS should be monituring them to make sure that thier children aren't doing anything stupid. As far as the lawsuits go, if something bad happens to a kid because the met a pedophile in real life that they were chatting with on myspace it shouldn't be Myspaces responsibility. 1st the creep who was trying to get together with a minor should be sent to prison, 2nd the kids PARENTS should be investigated my CPS because they are not taking care of their under age children!! (Knowing where they are, monitoring what they do online, keeping their kids safe...ect...) And lastly the parents and the kid need to get a reality check! Myspace or any other website is not a babysitter. It is not going to moniter what people are doing, saying or writing about. If a kid wants to get on myspace, parents should be the one to make sure their kids are not doing anything to be a danger to themselfs. Not some strangers, hundereds of miles away in an office who are struggling just to keep the damn website up and running half the time. It's is very easy to moniter all online activitys. Just by instaling a simple program. It will record all activity and parents can check it every few days or even everyday to make sure they know what their kids are doing. Some people are just too stupid and lazy to realize that THEY are responsible for their own children. Including who they talk to, what they are doing, and who they are involved with both online and off.

Only your internet securities are going to keep you somewhat safe from spyware, myspace can really do nothing about online predators, unless it's blatently obvious. You should really monitor your keeds behavior by simply checking their internet history, or sitting down and setting some limits. Myspace itself isn't a bad thing, as most kids nowadays have a myspace page, and it's basically just an online metting place for juveniles.

MySpace accounts can be set so only 'friends' can be allowed access - if your child wants (demands!!) access then this is the best compromise you're going to get.
There are moderators/helpers that you can email at MySpace, I'd look into that and see if you're comfortable with the solutions that they can offer.
I would recommend checking your child's space yourself on a regular basis, they won't know you're doing it so won't think you're sticking your nose in.
But yes, MySpace is an online communication tool - which can be used by *anyone*.

I would have to say, no place is going to be perfectly safe. This why it important to teach our children about the good and bad of the Inet and be sure they understand this. Predators are slick, in time they can question a person, Child or Adult, and gin much information. Example; What's your Dog's name? What kind of car your dad drive? I love Ice Cream, you have a Baskins Robbins close?
You be surprised how easy a person can get information. I tell may mom, when she get telemarketer calls, just hang up! The more you talk, the more information a person can pick you for.
Below the FBI, they want to talk to you. Ha! This a good area to browse a lot of good information.

Is TV safe for kids? Is the alley behind my house at 3 a.m. safe for kids?
A better question is, are you on myspace and are you watching your kids activities on myspace? Or do you let them be online without supervision?

Myspace has features to allow profiles "set to private." This means that none of the user's information will be displayed to people that they haven't "accepted as a friend" via their user control panel.

So...you want someone else to prevent harm.
Are you doing your part to educate your children on the dangers?
If they are properly educated, the risk is MUCH lower.
You teach them to cross the street proplerly, do you want the city to put up fences to protect your kids?
Same issue. Don't rely on anyone else to protect your kids. They'll be in the real world soon and if the are "protected" now, they won't know what to watch out for later.

1 - It is, as long as you are sensible about the account. Keep your profile private, don't use a real picture as your profile pic, and only accept friends requests from people you know. 2 - yes, as a matter of fact, an irresponsible parent tried to sue them for the "exploitation" of their child. 3 - they have set up privacy fetures that i just explained, and "Tom" sends out bullitens on safety often.

Well, if I allowed my children to use it, there would be alot of privacy stuff enables. I would say no, but it depends on how old your children are. I think it only allows you to register as 13 or older. This is kinda iffy, so I would go to the site and do some research on how it works a little more.

I would not want my young ones, like younger than fouteen to be on myspace.com. The site has features that allow to block your profile and so that people can't search for you and so on, but I wouldn't trust a pre-teen to implement and stick to those restrictions. Myspace.com has a lot of out-of-college aged people on it.
