I know the obvious reason, but how is this material used? This became a problem at the Infant School my child attends.

Because they are totally paranoid.

I very much doubt the material is used, ever. Although we all want our children to be safe, they are really not in danger from having their photo taken in their nativity.
This issue really bugs me, it's the sort of thing the Sun would campaign for "Stop these perverts" etc.
The real issue is that children are more likely to be abused by a trusted family member or friend- actual real abuse, not just a photo floating around of them fully dressed.
I am sure if we were ever unfortunate enough to encounter child pornography we would real;ise that like normal porn, not much of it is of the subject covered virtually head to toe as a shepherd.
I was at a presentation for my college a few weeks ago, and as it was a family learning course (highly recommended) our children were there to present certs etc. During the speeches a college lecturer was taking photos, as is normal at these occasions and a woman actually interuppted the speaker to say they shouldn't be taking pics because children were there.
I would have liked photos of my kids there and would have asked the lady for copies if the stupid cow at the front hadn't done that.
The best is yet to come however-our local paper came to take our picture for the occasion and guess who shoved all her kids to the front? Yep, it's o.k for the whole town to see her kids but not within a respectable institution. We were all gobsmacked.
My childs school also had a few years like this until i spoke to the head and said that any parents who have a problem with their children being filmed & photographed should keep their children out of the play as they would be in the serious minority and I didn't want to explain to my children that I had no record of these times because we were all scared bad people would look at them.
It is politcal correctness gone crazy, when you consider what I said about children being more at risk from people they know and trust, but as this is something we don't want to face it becomes as petty and ridiculous as that.
Oh, and I rarely photograph the other kids, only being interested in my own!
God, I really ranted then, sorry!

Before the web the chances of images of your children falling into the hands of a paedophile as a result of a school play where remote to say the least. Today, however, it is perfectly conceivable for a video to be shot in the afternoon and end up worldwide within a couple of hours.

Whilst the footage taken may seem harmless to parents there cannot be a parent who would appreciate images of their child being posted on child pornography groups. The local authority would get sued and Radio 4 would have a field day.

Sign of the times, I'm afraid.

I know the reason which is obvious but I don't really see why people would object. I have two children, one who is school age, and it is the same at her school. I think it is a shame as it means that I, the parent, can't take any pictures or have a memento video of my own child! I can understand it being a no no at the swimming pool etc and would object to that myself, but at the school nativity play! It's not as if they take any clothes off or any flesh being exposed at all.

I can only think the school is thinking if a paedo is taking pictures he might then use those pictures to target a child which makes sense. It's just a shame that those sickos have to spoil it for everyone.

Further to the mention of images of children being put on child porn sites - apparently a lot of child pornographers want to hide the identities of children actually being abused in pictures (to escape prosecution or detection) and will do this by photoshopping a different head on the body in these pictures - from innocent sources such as play pictures.

Aside from the answers already mentioned (paedophiles), there is another valid reason.

A kid at my school growing up wouldn't have his pictures allowed published in school productions and newspapers b/c his father had abandoned their family, and his mother did not want anyway for the father to find them by looking through a newspaper.

Makes sense.

It's to stop Perverts with Camcorders zooming in on your kids underpants or such like, then using it to self pleasure or stick on the Internet to share with other Scumbags. It's ridiculous it has come to this but most schools will or should record it and you will be able to purchase a copy. Check with the school.
Hope this is some help!!

It is because they feel it may fall into the wrong hands. These creeps will go to any ends to satisfy their perversions.A teacher at our school took still photos at the dress rehersal and they were sold very cheaply for school funds. They were better than haphazard snapshots the children were not distracted and we got decent harmless photos

Well I for one dont know of a single person who would actually object. Do you? Its pc gone mad, like the way schools wont put on nativity plays for fear of offending the same mythical body of people.
