This one's a tie...
"In Love and War", starring Callum Blue and Barbora Bobulova, about a British soldier, Eric Newby, who was caught while serving in WW2 Italy, and how he met this beautiful lady, Wanda. This tv movie is based on a real-life story of the late travel writer, Eric Newby, and his Italian wife, Wanda.

"Schleroderma", starring Dana Delaney as a single mother who was diagnosed with a medical condition known as "schleroderma" which is the hardening of the nerves (something like Lou Gehrig's disease, Morrie's) and how her rebellious son changed for the better before her death. You'll need lots of tissues for this one. I think it's so much better than "Tuesdays with Morrie".

The Great Santini (1979) starring Robert Duvall was later released to the theaters and received two Oscar nominations; best actor & best supporting actor.

I'm not sure if it was first made for tv or released straight to VCR/DVD before going to the theatres.
