Is there something you've heard him say he needed? Like my dad is always complaining that his coffee cup isn't big enough for a large cup of coffee,but when you ask him what he wants for x-mas he just says "just get me socks" or something foolish like that. But he will never expect me to get him a coffee thermos or large cup. I found one that is silver and had his name engraved in it.
He's is also getting socks!

depends on his personality. I'm having same problems. My dad loves video games, puzzles and books, of course sports. Grr, of course he'd be the one making my life a pain this season, but I'll find something. Make it from the heart and keep in mind his likes, can't go too wrong there. Gonna look at Red Wings things, since my dad is a HUGE hockey fan!

I've never bought for my Dad(he died when I was 5)but you know what he likes, so get him that--or maybe a robe, slippers, a wallet,a valet,belt,sweater,or a picture of you and him doing something together.MERRY CHRISTMAS......

A massage...sounds strange but I got my dad one (not the type that would normally go for something like this) and he loved it - said he'd never felt so relaxed.
