I'm cleaning my gf's apartment and the 'bag full' indicator on her vacuum cleaner came on. Do you usually just empty it and put it back in or do I need to buy a new bag?

If it is paper you need a new bag. The pores become clogged.

You can not use the bag again, it will burn out the motor. If the bag gets full, the dust will clog the small holes in the bag and overheat the motor.
The bag works like an a/c filter- you can't reuse an a/c filter for the same reasons. Even if the bag isn't completely filled up, if you sucked up stuff like powder or a lot of carpet deoderizer, it will clog up the bag and overheat/burn out the motor. Not to mention it will reduce the suction a lot.
And to those who said you can cut it open and reuse it again; if dirt gets out of the bag and into the motor- even once- your vacuum is toast very soon afterwards. But some people will anyways, and then get mad when their vacuum kicks the bucket. Much easier to buy bags than a whole new vacuum.

Happy cleaning! And very sweet of you to vacuum your girlfriend's place!!

Reusable Vacuum Bags

You should replace the bag, but if you don't have one you can empty it and reuse it. I have done that myself. I had bought more bags but while in the middle of vacuuming I needed to change it and realized I had bought the wrong size. You can only empty it and reuse it once though.

You should just use a new bag, but, to truthfully answer your question; you can reuse a vacuum bag, just pull out all the dirt and dust balls and use again, but, it a real messy approach and a lot of work.

You can if it is a complete emergency. Cut the bottom off, you know where the fold is, not the hole and empty it out. Then use some duct tape to seal it back. The vacuum will still work pretty well, though not perfect. If all else fails you will have to sweep the carpet, its a tough job but I'm sure you can do it. In which case, you should dust after you sweep. Happy cleaning.

you can reuse the bag. Simply take it outside or hold down inside a large trash barrell and shake until empty or partially empty. This is messy, but I have done it when the bag was full and I was out of refills.

ummm.... i seriously think that you shold get a new bag. ok sure you probably could reuse it but think, what if something sharp got stuck inside and you flipped it over, or if it fell onto the bottom of the machine. if that object got sucked up it would likely cause alot of problems. i hope you make the right decision!

she should have a set of vaccume bags somewhere in the house. don't reuse it though, the vaccume won't pick up very well.

it also depends on the vaccume. usually when you take the bag out there's some type of instruction behind it.

You often can, but you should avoid it if possible. You are advised to change them when 1/2 full and never reuse them.

NO, because the bag is a filter, and has to be able to breath, so if it is a paper bag, you will rip it while trying to remove the dirt, if its a cloth or micro fabric bag, the pores are clogged and the bag is toast
