Love the song; Can't figure out what it's talking about. Here are the lyrics:

Welcome to the planet
Welcome to existence
Everyone's here
Everybody's watching you now
Everybody waits for you now
What happens next?

I dare you to move
I dare you to lift yourself up off the floor
I dare you to move
Like today never happened
Today never happened before

Welcome to the fallout
Welcome to resistance
The tension is here
Between who you are and who you could be
Between how it is and how it should be

Maybe redemption has stories to tell
Maybe forgiveness is right where you fell
Where can you run to escape from yourself?
Where you gonna go?
Where you gonna go?
Salvation is here

my interpretation of it was always like, feeling like you were just beamed down to this planet, like how you go through the motions and you feel new and like you have some purpose and you're just getting ready to figure it all out.
its like well, you're here, I dare you to move, I dare you to do things with your life and what not. just basically welcome to the planet this is it....

This trips a lot of people up actually because there is a common view of Switchfoot as a primarily spiritual band, which is true in some ways, but this song is not actually much of an example of that.
This song was actually recorded in early 2002 and was directed at President George Bush after the 9/11 terrorist attacks. ("Everyone's here/Everybody's watching you now/Everybody waits for you now/What happens next?") This very much symbolized the uncertainty of the people at the time and the cry for strong leadership in the wake of an event that had never before been seen ("I dare you to move/Like today never happened/Today never happened before"). The song is a call to action, however, the song also focuses on redemption and forgiveness instead of hate ("Maybe redemption has stories to tell/Maybe forgiveness is right where you fell"). The lines about "fallout," "tension," and "resistance" are also very symbolic of the struggle against terrorism that was just beginning in late 2001 and early 2002, but also the struggle to keep a positive, loving face on instead of spiraling into hatred and violence. The line "Between who you are and who you could be" reflect sympathy for Bush's responsibility in dealing with a nation-wide crisis that would have halted any other plans he had for the nation, while "Between how it is and how it should be" acknowledges the horror of 9/11 (something that should not be) but also accepts the reality of the situation (how it is).
Due to political concerns and respect for victims, despite being recorded in 2002, the song was not actually released until 2004 which accounts for a lot of the misunderstanding about the lyrics' meaning.

Switchfoot Dare You To Move

This song was recorded in 2000, originally titled "I Dare You To Move" It was originally released on their 'Learning to Breathe' album in 2000. The original song was a softer more acoustic version and was the title song for the soundtrack of the movie 'A Walk To Remember'. In 2006 they released a stronger version and dropped the "i" from the title.

The actual meaning of this song is about how we all have sin, and we just need to accept that. It doesn't make you bad, but you need to overcome it. And goes on to challenge everyone to grow from the person we are, to the person we want to become. Essentially challenging everyone to reach or strive for their potential, that everyone has inside them. In order to do that, we need to act, we need to pursue something or make an effort to change whatever it is that needs changing in our lives. Hence the title 'Dare You To Move' lamens terms, I challenge you to take that first step to becoming the person you want to be. I dare you to move!

Switchfoot is definitely a Christian rock band. Whether that specific song could be classified as 'Rock' is a toss-up, amazing song, just not as fast or heavy as the rest of their stuff.

What the song means to me, and I'm going to go on the whole song. Sorry it might be long. lol
Anyhow, what it means to me is being on this planet means we are going to make mistakes. And when we fall people are going to see us falling and they are going to wait to see if we get up or stay down. The chorus is basically saying to get up. Don't live on the ground where you fell, that's not really living anyhow. When it says live like today never happened, that to me is an example of forgivness. God doesn't remember my sins when I ask for forgiveness, so why should I continue to beat myself up about them?
My favorite part of the song is: The tension is here, Between who you are and who you could be, Between how it is and how it should be"
And that to me means the tension is unforgiveness, falling, or any sin that is in my life and until I confess that sin to God it's going to stay between me and him like a wall. God has something so very special planned for everyones life and we could be so much more then what we are living for. Who we are is defined by anything we do, but it could be so much more then that. When we fall and mess up and stay on the ground, that's not how God wants it. It's not what our lives are suppose to be.
And the last verse, redemption does have stories to tell. That means that when we become redeemed of our sins, that becomes our story to be able to reach out to others. Why run to escape from ourselves when salvation is in front of us for the taking? We don't have to run, and like it says, where are we going to go anyhow?
eh, sorry for the longishness of this. I hope it helped answer your question though.

Yes this is a Christian Band...This song tells a story of the beginning of a person's life and the decision that we all will come to in our life, and that's accepting Jesus Christ in your heart and that's the only way in having a personal relationship with Father God through His Son Jesus. God offers us Salvation through believing in His Son Jesus Christ and what He did for you on the Cross. Either we will accept this free gift or reject it. The gift of Salvation is here, for anyone who is willing to receive it.

I guess its some guy talking to a girl, and sayin that he will be in her life now to help her through her problems.

Switchfoot is a christian rock band, so it also may be spiritual in some odd way.

Good tune tho.
