Nowhere. I went there back in May for a pretty nice price. Was not worth it we booked it through apple vacations. Place had ants everywhere. Food was horrible. Nothing to do at all. The beach was the ONLY nice thing. IF you are going there you are better off spending more money and staying at an actual nice place. Trust me if you try to get a cheap place it will ruin your vacation.
P.S. they do have amazing rum there!

I have been to the Dominican 4 times - once to Puerto Plata and 3 times to Punta Cana. I have to say the Iberostars are an excellent resort chain. Their headquarters are out of Spain, and they are ultra all inclusive - meaning everything is included: air, hotel, food, drinks and tips. I stayed at the Iberostar in Puerto Plata and it was immaculately clean. I went in Feb and there were no bugs. I actually slept with the patio door open. The majority of resorts spray every month, so bugs and things are a rarity. The beaches of Punta Cana are calmer and bluer because Punta Cana is on the Caribbean side (Puerto Plata is on the northern Atlantic side).
My major tip to you no matter where you go - stay at a 5 apple rating or above. You never no what you will get with a 4 apple or lower. To give you a price idea - When I first went to Puerto Plata 4 years ago: 7 day all inclusive at the Iberostar was $850 US dollars. On the other side of that spectrum, I went to the Secrets Excellence in Punta Cana last Oct for a 7 day all inclusive for $1800 US dollars.
Check out the authority on Dominican's all-inclusive:
www.debbiesdominicantravel.com
Debbie is a travel agent who has been to the Dominican more times than I can count, and she has her own personal reviews of all kinds of hotels, and she has reviews from travelers. Every hotel on the island is reviewed - even the non-all inclusive (although the majority are all-inclusive). You can not book on her site, but it is a wealth of information. The reviews are very thorough and are from all over - mainly the UK, Canada and the US. Just because someone gives a bad review does not mean it is a bad resort. If someone post a bad review because their room was small - well how much are you in your room? Usually not very much.
To book - www.applvacations.com and www.funjet.com
Both sites have cheap all-inclusive packages. A tip about those web sites - the real deals are posted about 1-3 months prior to departure date. Meaning, they are posting departure dates from Jan -March right now. If you can leave that soon, you can stay at the Iberostar Dominica (Punta Cana) for 7 nights including airfare, food, drinks and tip for about $1,200 US dollars. I didn't even look that hard and found that. If you look around more, you could find prices as low as $900 for 7 days in a at least a 5 apple resort.
One more tip - if I can't find a great fare out of my city - I always check neighboring cities' fares. For me, that would be Pittsburgh or Detroit. Sometimes, a 2 hour car ride is worth it if you can save a few hundred dollars.
Also consider the Mexican Riviera - the beaches are spectacular as just 1/4 mile of the coast is the worlds 2nd largest barrier reef (2nd only to the Great Barrier Reef of Australia)! Snorkeling is excellent, and it is a top diver destination. I usually stay in a town called Puerto Aventuras (about 1 hour south of Cancun).
No matter where you go, here are some great resort chains: Iberostars, Breezes, Secrets Excellence(probably the best spa's), the Rui (although I hear these are quite large - not sure what size hotel you are looking for).
Anyway, good luck and have fun searching. Let me know if you have any questions.

the allegro is reasonable there is also the bravo it is cheap but nice they are all basically on the same streatch of beach no matter where you stay, if you can spend a little more the Iberostars hotels are the best, been there a few times the beaches are the best 40 miles worth, and you can walk the whole thing without being botherd its awsome good luck

The Barcelo Bavaro resorts weren't too bad. My roommate and i stayed there pretty cheaply. Of course we didn't stay in an ocean front room. We stayed in the golf part of the resort but there is a tram that will take you to the other parts of the resort and there is a short path to the beach from that section. We didn't have any problems with it and it was somewhat cheaper.
