In an apparent reversal of decades-old secrecy policy .. Prime Minister Ehud Olmert of Israel said 2 days ago that Israel has the ME's only nuclear weapons...
This raised a question and a firestorm in Israel as well as the Arab World..

((It could be that Olmert wanted to hint at Israel's capability as part of the aggressive statements he has recently been making with the goal of warning the West that if they don't take care of Iran .. Israel will .. )) >> wrote Yediot analyst Ronen Bergman
__
I think Israel will take on alone against Iran akin to its 1981 airstrike against the main Iraqi atomic reactor at Osiraq..

It could be a warning to Iran. Israel and America seem to believe that Iran wants to develop nuclear weapons.

The fact that Israel has nukes is a surprise to absolutely no one, certainly not the Arab countries. There have been books published about the Israeli nuclear program. In fact I think the author even went to prison for writing it. My personal opinion is that the Arab countries awareness of Israels nuclear capability, more than any other single factor, is what has kept the relative peace for over 30 years.
As for why Olmert said it, it could have been a slip of the tongue or a calculated move to remind Iran that Israel already has the capability of defending itself.

He didn't really say it; but maybe it was intentional.
Just a little reminder to all the anti-Semitic lunatics surrounding Israel, hellbent on "finishing Hitler's work" as they call it, and Iran, that Israel has the capability to completely destroy them.
The restraint Israel constantly demonstrates is amazing.

If Israel didn't have the nukes, then Vanunu spent 18 years in solitary confinement for nothing. After his arrest, the policy was never really secrecy, but double-talk.

From his speech, comparing Israel to other nuclear states, it is obvious that Israel has it-a fact which was already known long ago. I don't think Israel, or any ME state (should it have nuclear weapons) will ever use it, though.

By saying it out loud, Olmert put Israel's U.S. aid in 'jeopardy'. Seems we have some law...nope, forgot, GWB, etal are above the law.
Hopefully, Israeli whistleblower, Mordechi Vanunu will finally be released from prison.

the U.S. could've given them the nukes some time ago for protection.
