Ice tongs. When the ice man would deliver ice to your home he would lift the fifty pound block of ice onto a leather pad that was strapped to his shoulder. The ice was placed into an insulated cabinet called an ice box. The ice box was used as a refrigerator to keep food cool. Sometimes the iceman would have to carry the ice up several flights of stairs to apartments. A strong iceman might be able to carry a block of ice on each shoulder. The ice might be cut from frozen lakes or rivers in the winter and stored in an ice house. It was kept insulated for use in warmer weather by covering it with sawdust from the nearby saw mill (saw mills often used water power to run their saws). On warm days children would follow the ice wagon and beg the iceman for small pieces of ice that would break off from the blocks. The youngsters would use these pieces of ice to cool themselves, sort of like an un-flavored Popsicle.
