Heat in 98% of vehicles comes from the cooling water of the car, it is transferred to the air by the use of a core, a lot like a radiator but smaller. This uses no more energy than running the engine.
The cooling comes from a compressor that has yet another core that flows cool refrigerant from the A/C compressor which can eat up to 12% of the engines power to run it. the A/C also runs during defrost cycle to remove moisture from the heated air.

The heat is provided by hot water from the engine cooling system running through a small "radiator", so it's heat for nothing, apart from the electricity used to drive the circulating fan. When you turn the heat off, a valve stops that hot water going through that little radiator.

Turning the air-con on does use a small amount of power, but less than the drag caused by driving at 40mph with the windows open.

Does that help?

Cool air is generated by your air conditioner which uses energy to run a compressor. Warm air is obtained from your engine coolant, and costs you nothing (The engine needs to get rid of excess heat anyhow, hence the radiator in front).. That's why heat doesn't come up until the engine's warm, but A/C is very quick.

No. The heat comes from the warmth your motor already produces. It uses a small radiator in the dash called a "heater core" where hot motor coolant is pushed throuhg to produce heat. The only extra gas you will use is the electricity to run the blower which is next to nothing... I agree with the first guy also. lol

these dopes think elect. motors use horsepower and gas .BS, the alt makes 14 volts the battery needs only 12.. .They r right about the heat being free. the motor is already hot...The ac uses a little gas but not much. why pay 1000 dollars for ac and not use it because it costs a few pennies a day to run it? Be cool, be hot...

No heat does not use as much A.C. uses more Gas.Heat comes from a heater core that is heated by the water in your radiator that cools your engine so it does not use as much gasoline. your A.C. is a compresser that runs off your pully system when you have it on it uses more gas and when you run your A.C. you also lose H.P. fans in your vents are electric

Neither use much gas. They work off the electric system of the car (the battery). They both work off the blower.
