Gameboy Advance is the way to go.
You can play the same games as gameboy color, and is easier the title selection is broader. They have plenty of games for ages around 9.

Game boy advance definately...do not get the color..Used game stores dont even buy/ sell the games anymore...you will be stuck with a system you cant buy games for.
However dont shy away from the SP. I would actually suggest the SP...I have 3 boys ages 5-9....they are typical boys..very rough with their stuff...all 3 SPs have been around now for 2 years with no problems..and believe me..they are not exactly gentile. The SP is better because the screen is very easy to see and they really like it better. There is also the gameboy MICRO..this would also be an option to look into.
I have bought a DS for my 9 year old this year..it was all he asked for and will play all of his advance games
Merry Christmas!

The Gameboy advance can play Gameboy color games. Also, the control set up is more comfortable. Last time I checked, they were roughly the same amount of money to buy.

My eight year old son asked for a Nintendo DS. I was reluctant to get it (because of the flip screen), but after purchasing the Buyers Protection Warrantee at Toys R Us, I feel better about the purchase. If anything happens to it, they will replace it. Just one thing: if the DS gets ran over by a car, get creative and tell them that the dog ate it (or something).
I hope sharing this will make you feel better about getting the DS. The BPW costs $16.99 you can get additional details at Toys R Us.
P.S. Game Boy Advance games work on the DS... They just only use one of the DS screens.

My 8-year-old daughter loves her Gameboy Advance, but this year asked for a Nintendo DS. Be prepared that no matter what you get her, she'll want something else next year! I'm with you on the PSP...too expensive for someone so young.

If I am not mistaken, the game boy color unit is no longer available and the game boy advance unit is being phased out slowly. You would be better off purchasing a Nintendo DS. The game boy advance games I believe will work on this game unit.
