I have a desktop and 2 laptops. Currently the desktop is hooked to my Linksys router and my laptops run on the wireless network. I want to move my desktop to an area of hte house that currently doesn't have a phone jack (i.e. no access to the DSL connection).

Is it possible to leave the modem/router where it is and have the desktop connect via wireless, or does the router have to connect to at least one computer?

I have a hunch i know the answer, but am hopeful someone can give me a suggestion that will avoid me having to put in a new jack. thanks!

The best solution is to leave your router where it is and purchase a Wireless adaptor for your desktop. These are generally USB so easy to connect and it will pick up the wireless signal wherever you put the desktop in your house.

Good Luck!

No you can get a wireless card for the desktop and have it connect wirelessly and leave the router where it is.

No.

I have a router which "stands alone", not connected to anyhting, in a corner of my bench, which I use as a test connection whenever I'm working on a wireless machine, etc.

Works just fine :-)

No, there does not need to be a Physically connected connection to your Router for it to work.

You do not have to have a computer physically hooked up to it. Everything can be wireless and it will work just the same.
