In addition, there is one federal district called the District of Columbia. It's a small area which contains the capital of Washington (not to be confused with the state of the same name). There is also one Commonwealth in Free Association with the United States which is Puerto Rico. There are a number of territories as well including Guam, the Northern Marianas Islands, the American Virgin Islands, and American Samoa as well as several islands which are not inhabited, at least not permanently.
The difference between a state and these extra territories is that only states may send delegates to Congress which are allowed to vote and only residents of states may vote in presidential elections (with the exception of DC). Otherwise, residents of these areas are still considered full citizens of the U.S.

If, by saying America, you mean the United States of America, 50. America can also refer to 2 entire continents, North and South America. If so, then by states in America, do you mean how many countries there are in North and South America?
