Blankets, lots and lots of baby blankets. Baby carrier, I reccomend Mei Tei style or wraps (both of which you can make yourself if you sew). Carseat *lol*
That's it really. Aside from diapers, wipes, clothes. Bottles if you are bottle feeding. Your baby won't need anything elses for a long time.
Things that are nice. Cloth change pads (with vinyl backing) they are warmer than the vinyl ones. A swing or bouncy seat, although it is good to wait until the baby is here and see which she likes BUT it is hard to get out of the house with a newborn!
Hmmm yup that's it.

OMG!!! Stop buying stuff!! I totally understand the urge to be ready but I is totally overwhelmed by the generosity of co-workers and friends. My babe is 5 months old and I've barely bought her any clothes. People have been passing on BAGS of it for me. Bottles, toys, blankets, etc..... It was a real blessing.
At the start, you need so little. Wait and see if anything comes your way before buying them. Tell your husband that you'll want to shop later too- like for spoons, bibs, bowls and stuff.
You can never have enough recieving blankets & little face clothes. You won't believe how much a little baby can spit up!!
The one thing that we got as a shower gift that was used the most was a vibrating bouncy chair. We used that everyday for the first 3 months. Also, the safe and cosy sleep so the our babe could sleep in our bed without us fearing we'd roll on her. It 's a little hard sided fold out mattress with a night light.
CONGRATS!!! & good luck!
PS: save your reciepts in case you buys stuff that needs to go back.

Burp clothes = #1 after "the obvious".
Changing table...your life will be hecktick and unorganized without one...my son was a month early...and we didnt have a changing table for a month...life was so much easier once we finally got it...we got one thats a dresser with a tower on the side so when he's older its a dreser too that matches his crib...on top of that we got an other big dresser and a nursery cart for all his burp clothes, blankets, towels.
A GOOD RECTILE thermometer...not those cheap 3 dollar ones.
PORTABLE Play mat gym, Swing, Exersaucer, Bouncer chair...some kids don't like any of those while others like them all and yet a few will like 3/4 and so on...i got them all! Just in case. Musical and light toys. Baby einstein DVDS! Hanging toys for the carseat...it REALLY helps when your out on long trips...
Bassinet, pack n play..to keep in the livingroom.and bedroom with you. Sleep aid triangles so baby doesnt roll over.
If you are having a boy...and cicumcision is in the plays...you will need 2 boxes of gauze pads and sterile petrolium jelly.
More then one type of pacifier and bottle...some babys really hate certain ones...and it takes time to find out which one they will take to...my son is breastfed and he wont take ANY!
When baby is older its nice to have those take a long seat covers for the shopping cart and resturant high chair..i've got those... i cant wait till my son is old enough to use them! lol

I loved my bassinet is nice to have baby in the same room with you when they are newborn and a swing or bouncy seat is a necessity start buying books now I started reading to my daughter when I was still pregnant can never have too many books or diapers be careful if people give you secondhand stuff it may not pass todays safety standards especially carseats, cribs, and sleepwear dont worry about toys for now they dont really use them until they are a little older good luck
