I have a friend who tells me I should avoid mentioning my job as a nanny if I want to be attractive to men, because men dislike nannies. (Women possibly dislike nannies, too, but my friend is concerned with men here.) I have also noticed that, sometimes, when I tell people I am a nanny (because they ask me what I do), they assume that I must also be in school or have plans to do something different. Actually, I make nearly three times the minimum wage and the job is fairly fun. I am also doing no ethical harm in my job. Why would I be more likely to be in school or making plans for a different career than anyone else?

What do you think? Do you hate nannies? If so, is it because we are not wealthy, for for some other reason?

I do not hate nannies. I believe they are a better alternative for career families than day care.I know that some students do work as nannies to finance their education and others who are only baby sitters say they are nannies because it sounds more professional. I believe anyone who has a negative view of a person who has chosen to be a nanny is making a mistake in judgment. A professional nanny must be kind, compassionate and organized among other things. Also someone who has chosen this as her profession is much more likely to be a better nanny than someone who is only using it as a means to another end.

I don't think anyone "hates" nannies, in fact most people, at least in the US have never actually met one. Usuallly only wealthy people in the US have nannies- children go to day care, or pre-school generally, and parent's use baby sitters if they go out in the evenings. I think some people might think of a nanny more as a baby sitter- and that's why they likely assume you are still in school, because baby sitters are young and still in school, since baby sitting would have flexible hours. And the assumption may be (unfairly perhaps) that a nanny is a dead end job, and some people might not consider it to be a permanent career choice.

I am a woman; I dont hate nannies but I dont prefer to use their services; mainly because my husband has heard too many horrible stories. It has nothing to do with the attractiveness of the job; I think good nannies do the most important jobs in the world.

Dear people are always going to say one thing or the other...if you enjoy what you do and also like you said you make 3 times more money then why not.... Answer me this: Do you think someone will be attractive to you by what kind of job you have or by what kind of person you are??? Another thing is if you need to support some loved one then you will be able to manage this by making more money or by minimum wage??? More money is always good and it is hard to find a job that pays to well and is actually fun.... so please consider these things first then answer your friends... tell them u r better off by making 3x money then just min wage... so i hope i answered ur question...

Thanks

how can you hate someone who is a caregiver to children?? i think it's a wonderful profession. if i didn't enjoy being the workplace so much, then i would consider being a nanny.
and yes, you are correct in that a nanny position can be quite lucrative financially.

if you are teaching those in your care how to be good folks, you are doing a great job.
