I want to find extra wide boots for my father in law, but I want to find a local merchant, so he can go try them on, then I can get them for him...

Try a local big and tall mens store (or one that caters to that) they usually carry extra wide and sometimes they have the right size because of the venue and their not listed as extra wide.

Your best bet is to go to a Western store that carries boots like Justin, Wolverine, or Georgia boot. I don't know if you're buying work boots or boots for a night on the town, but a Western store should be able to take care of you either way. Also, a good indicator that a store carries extra wide boots is if they offer boot repair. If the store offers repair, then nine chances out of ten they will cater to boot purchasers and offer a wide range to choose from.
