Hi, my husband's company is hosting their annual holiday reception (evening party). Will it be OK if I wear the traditional Indian sari for the event? The comapany has a good mix of foreign nationals and the sari is considered to be 'formal' attire in India. Please help with sincere opinions, do I stay ordinary with the regular party dress/suit or can look different in a sari?
Thanks and Merry X-mas, happy holidays!

Thanks for all of your suggestions and comments. I personally preferred the sari, but since it is my husband's company reception, I thought it was only fair that I go by what he would be comfortable with. He vehemently opted for the western formal suit for me and told me to be lavish and buy something nice.
So, that's what I did. I wore a dress but flaunted my Indian jewellery and got a lot of compliments. Thanks again for you insights.

My husband is from Pakistan and I (am a white American). I lived there with him and his family for two years and adopted the shalwar chemise. We have come back to the US and tonight I was invited to a formal Christmas dinner. I wore the shalwar chemise because it is made with a kind of geisha japanese silk and beautiful embroidery. Personally I prefer this kind of fashion any time I am invited somewhere formal. People always compliment me because they admire my style. And tobe honest with you, I prefer Asian dress over American because I think that American clothes are not properly sized as well as they are so plain and not very appealing. You should definitely wear the sari if it makes you feel comfortable and confident about your appearance. In PK the women wear something similar to a sari but they wrap it around their shoulders and head (I usually don't wear that article) but still like the chemise and shalwar trousers. Tonight I took the cover duputta and wrapped it around my shoulders like a shawl. I have invented many different ways of wearing the duputta.

Are you Indian? If you are, why not wear the Sari?

If you are just going to wear it for the effect, then perhaps not.

Then, again, why not wear it. Nothing wrong with different.
