Well, depends on the other symptoms and kind of cough. If he's congested and has a dry or slightly phlegmy cough (coming from post nasal drip and not the chest), then one week is early -- he could have that kind of a cough for weeks. My daughter has. If he has a fever that's hanging on, or the cough is coming from his chest, see a doctor right away.
Also, with kids, you can go a lot by how they seem. Is he playing, seem happy, can you make him smile and laugh? Is he eating and, more importantly drinking during the day? If he seems fairly normal to you, he is probably fine. Still, keep an eye on temp and where the cough seems to be originating. A cough from the chest is much more worrisome than a dry cough.

As long as he's not having difficulties breathing he's fine.
Coughs can last a couple weeks. Especially if the mucus causes infection.
Regular tussin, if he's old enough, losens the mucus so he can cough it up easier and more effectively.
If he has fever and is coughing, cant breathe well, weezes, or you can hear his lungs rattle, take him to the doctor, that would mean he has an infection and not just a cought.
Viral infections of the sinuses often end up in the lungs from post-nasal drip. This extra fluid in the lungs, because of the natural bacteria that grows in it, can often cause a bacterial infection which leads to broncitis and pnuemonia. Antibiotics clear it up, but until its a bacterial infection, nothing can be done but help his immune system with good diet, agents that losen mucus, rest and fluids.

How old is your son? My son is 7 months and has had his cough for about 3 weeks. The doctor put him on a nebulizer (machine that turns the medicine into a vapor and it's blown into his mouth), and the cough is much better but still not gone. I have the cough too. It must be going around. Is his cough a barky cough or dry cough? You should ask your doctor what to do.

It depends how old your son is - if under a year you really need a doctor to give you the o.k. to give him anything. If over a year, you can try baby benedryl or some other kid's cough syrup. And if really worried then make an appointment with doc, but remember tis the season for coughs and colds and 1 week really isn't that long to have one. It'll take little ones slightly longer to rid themselves of coughs because they can't effectively clear their systems as fast as we can.

First, you should call and ask to speak to your pediatrician's nurse. Explain the symptoms and she'll tell you whether or not she thinks you need to bring your child in to see the doctor. Even if she doesn't think you need to bring your child in they can still recommend an over the counter brand of medicine that will be best for you child based on its age and weight.

I use several drops of fresh sqeezed lemon in a cup of hot water, drank at least twice a day. I got over my cough in a couple of days. A little bit of honey in hot boiled water also works.
