Graco makes a rear facing car seat called Safeseat that fits up to thirty pounds. I just switched my baby to one and I love it. They're supposed to be rear facing until 1 year AND 20 lbs.

I would say it is time to buy a new one if the straps can't be loosened anymore. We just bought our eight month old daughter a new carseat. It is a transitional carseat. She can use it now rear facing and then when she reaches a year old we can turn it around and she can use it that way. Once she is about three years old we can stop using the five point harness and use it as a booster with a seatbelt. It works from 5-80 pounds. They are the best because you can use them for a lot longer. We also have one for my older daughter.

Most Definatel a new car seat. I know SOME car dealerships (at least some of the ones in the town i live in) if you're not entirely certain on what kind of carseat to get they will recocmend what kind for your child. (there are some out there as well that have carseats for those who can't afford a new one that will donate a new one to you) Each carseat has the specifications on the size of baby that it is best reccomended for.

You car seat probably has a maximm of 22lbs, and some length. Your son may exceed the length.
However now you need to get a convetible carseat because your baby needs to be rearfacing until AT LEAST age one, and as long thereafter as possible.
Most convertible carseats can stay rearfacing to 33lbs. Now if you are like me you are thinking, but my son is going to weigh more than 33lbs before a year. My baby was 20lbs at 4 months. But at 8 months he wa 25 lbs. So it is going to be close, but what are you going to do?
I haven't been able to find any that are rearfacing longer, even the Britax ones.
Best of luck!

If he is still in a carrier car seat and the straps have been extended as far as they can then I would say get a new seat...they have some that are universal. They are for rear facing, then when they get the correct weight they can be turned around and then they turn into boosters. I would try babies r us, or walmart. They have great selcetions of seats. They even have seat now that can be used till the baby is 80lbs or more.

I was in the same situation when my babe was 4 months old and weighed 16 lbs. I was panicking b/c she was outgrowing her seat and she was still too small for the next one. I went in to a children's shop to get a new seat and they looked at the seat and got me some more strap. In the back of mine, there is a meal brace that you can remove and re-insert on a second loop of the tightening strap. It gave us a few more inches of strap and another month and a half out of the seat.
I hope this helps.

you can put hm in a larger car seat, but you wont be able to take it out out the car.. he will still have to go backwards until a year old but you can do that with a regular car seat. it starts at 5 pounds and goes up to 40 pounds. have you tried to loosen the straps? my daughter is 8 months and 18 pds and still in an infant car seat.

Most carseats have straps that can be loosened. Look on the back and see if you can readjust them. If not, he has outgrown that carseat and you need the next one up. You will have to purchase a new one.

First of all try to loosen the straps. My daughter is 6 months and i had to loosen her straps. Second of all make sure that your son is still rear facing. This is important until they are 1 and so many pounds. Check with your local police station. They can tell you how to properly install and see if the seat needs to be adjusted. ALWAYS USE A 5-POINT HARNESS SEAT

I would think the carseat would have straps that could be loosened to fit your baby. If that doesn't work discuss it with his doctor.
