I have a 5 month old too and since on off work for the year $$ is tight. This is what we're doing her her:
-pooh bear ring toy
-baby's first Xmas ornament
-swimming lessons at the local pool
I am also wrapping up a few toys I got as shower gifts that were too old fer her then so she can open them. I've told all my family to put money in to her education fund. Since she probably won't remember the Xmas, it is a good time for Ed fund donations. Part of me feels like this is so little but then the other part of me says, is Christmas really about stuff and spending more than you have? So, there is what we're doing.

I guess it depends on whether or not you have a big family. Last Christmas my son was 4 months old. We bought him clothes for Christmas. We don't have that big of a family but we still ended up with a lot of toys and clothes for our son. I would say dont spend too much money on toys and stuff. They grow out of clothes quickly, lol. Plus, they are more interested in boxes and stuff from the kitchen drawers than they are in toys. Do you own an Exersaucer? That was a very good investment for my son. Building blocks (soft ones) would be good for your boy. I wouldn't buy into any of that technology stuff for your son, esp at this age. IMO babies don't have enough attention span for that, plus you can bond with your son by showing him colorful board books and naming things for him. I did that with my son, now he enjoys opening and "reading" books. Small things that he can get a good grip on and chew on would be good toys. Honestly, you'll probably play with the toys more than your son does. My son is 15 months old. We have two toy boxes full of stuff (I didnt buy it all, most were gifts) and he only plays with four (yes, four!) toys. Mainly, he likes to play in the cat dishes, lol. This Christmas we are buying him 3 toys.

When my children were that age they got mostly clothes for christmas they are at the age where they dont have a clue what christmas is, so buy things that the baby will need when he gets a little older, maybe like a bigger car seat or a toddler bed, and maybe a couple teethers and smaller toys in his stocking

music is alway a good option. try laurie berkner, she does great childrens music and it'll be great for many many years to come. $13 at walmart. Also try baby enstine movies and they have the appropriate age listed on the movie, you can also get cd's instead. They're all classical but really good. Movers and shakers are good for kids that age, unbreakable baby mirror, teething blanket, a toy that will fasten into your baby's car seat and keep him occupied in the car it also comes with a remot control so you can make it light up and sing a song if your baby's unable to do it. Those are nice too if you drive around a lot. hope you find some of these helpful.

Maybe I'm a little cynical, but he's only 5 months old, so he won't remember much of anything.

On the other hand, if you've got older kids, they'll remember that Santa didn't bring anything to Junior....

Get him toys, clothes he'll be needing anyway (you know he's going to grow out of what he's wearing fast...), he'll enjoy the wrapping paper and bows almost more than the gifts...

Jsut get things that help you help him. maybe a learning toy or two. A johnny jump up is nice. Or a tummy time mat.

He wont remember anything you get him, and you'll be the one who not only remembers it, but implements is usage the most. So get something you'd like him to have, because it makes your life easier, and helps him develop.

Also, an heirloom piece, or something he can keep as something special all his life, is always nice for his first christmas, whether he remembers when he got it or not.

I bought my girl some fisher-price peek a blocks! with all different textures on them, like rubber, ribbons, felt etc. and the fisher price roll a rounds gumball machine, you put the balls in the top and push the lever and they roll all over the floor! The see-thru balls have little bells or rattle-y things inside. She seems to love playing with the christmas tree baubles, so hopefully she'll like it!
and a blow up lion thingy to knock over, it came free with some other stuff!
So not much really, they wouldnt know any different! But im sure you'll get loads of stuff from your family and friends too!

stop worrying! he's too little to understand christmas, so he doesn't care!

take his picture with santa or in front of the tree to remember his first christmas.

your family will be getting him presents, so just get him a toy or a new outfit.
my son is 3 months and that's all we're doing for him. we're going to be buying so many toys and clothes this next year that i'm not going crazy for christmas.

take care:)

oh, and don't forget "baby's first christmas" ornament!!!!

Go to the toy section of the store. Buy him stacking blocks for 6 months and under, rattles and other toys for 6 months and under (they are marked on the box usually). Also, get him a teddy bear that is safe (no button eyes that he can pull out and swallow). Get him a play mat for the floor! And lots of board books to read to him.
