If you are talking about Microsoft updates then I would suggest that he gets them installed. Updates are usually patches. Patches are just that, patches. They patch up "holes" in the program (i.e. operating system) so that others can not take advantage of those "holes" (vulnerabilities).

Shouldn't really slow the computer down, but it may be slow due to not downloading the updates cause his computer has been invaded by worms, virus etc.. That's what the updates are for, not downloading them just leaves the computer vulnerable to what the patches were intended for.

It might, but not likely. Not applying updates will cause the computer to be open to the security holes that the updates fixed.

It is recommended to install all the critical updates that MS releases. There is a reason they are making them critical, don't you think?! It might not effect the speed of your computer, but it will surely help you to fight virus and spyware attacks.

Updates are not going to speed anything up. I've found that most of Microsoft's Updates are useless to me.
