I used baking soda for carpets with pets and the baking soda smells awful. I've vacuumed three times since, changing the bag but the baking soda smell is still there. The carpet really didn't smell to begin with, but I thought the baking soda would freshen up the house a bit. Instead, now I have an odor like I'm trying to cover something up. ugh! Please help- we have a party in two days.

You are going to have to get a steam cleaner and scrub the carpets with that and the soap required for the cleaner. You can rent one if you don't own one. That's the quickest way, the other option is just time. Or get another brand without baking soda in it, they have a Glade Brand at Walmart that I use that smells good, but it may just mask the oder short term.

First make sure your carpet and pad has completely dried out. That means open all the windows and doors you can, if it is humid it will take longer and basements are real hard to dry out. Also put some fans down, you would be suprised how long it takes for carpet to really dry out. The once everything has had a few days of good ventilation sprinkle some baking soda on the carpet and allow it to sit for several days then vacuum. Repeat the baking soda procedure a second time. There is even a baking soda carpet freshener for pets by ARm and Hammer, try it, that is what I used. You just really need to get everything aired out. If you had your carpets cleaned twice in 2 weeks I would be there is a lot of humidity down there and even though you don't think so it is still damp. If that doesn't work I have heard you can go the pet store or pet dept. of another store and find soemthing that breaks down the enzymes.

Baking soda has no odor. The smell attached inself to the baking soda particles. Sounds like you used too much and your vacuum is not efficient. You have to get up the baking soda BEFORE you shampoo the carpet.

the pad under the carpet works like a sponge, so when you get the carpet wet you are also getting the pad wet which brings the urine up from the pad through to the carpet. You can get a rug shampooer yourself and mix regular pine sol and water together and shampoo the carpet, since cats spray you might want to also use a spray bottle of the same mixter and spray around the edges so that it soaks into the tack strip and helps get rid of the smell. I'd use a 60/40 mix the 60 being the pinesol.

The smell may actually be in the air, and not the rug. Try opening a few windows to get an exchange of air. And always open a window a couple of inches when you vacuum. When we go to hotels we have to tell them not to use such "stuff" in the room while we are there as it makes me highly allergic. Try the exchange of air trick. It also helps to do this when you run air conditioner in your car. Friends 06

The best thing to do is clean the carpet. Using anything else will just add to the scent making it worse still!

You can't cover the scent, it has to be removed. Clean the carpet.
