get a job (babysitting, mcdonald's, a bagger at the grocery store) ask if you can get one of those pay as you go phones (Tracfone's), you will be responsible for all minutes put onto the phone, as long as you put minutes onto the phone every 60 days, the phone won't expire.
I had one a couple of years ago, phone cost $50, minutes were $20-$200 depending on how many minutes I wanted at a time--(I usually got the 100 minute card, cost $30 bucks everytime I bought it)

When I worked for Alltel, I had a customer come in and buy a cell phone for her 8 year old. 3 weeks later, he had lost it. So that is just a bit too young. But at the time, they didn't have the Firefly or the Migo, the new phones that can be preprogrammed only to dial 4 certain numbers and 911. Which I think is a neat idea.
What you can do is to compare prepaid wireless plans (except Tracfone, since they suck). Boost Mobile, Virgin Mobile and Cingular's GoPhone are a few names that immediately come to mind. And also Cricket is a good company too. I have a phone through them right now and it is a flat rate for unlimited airtime, text messages (which really gets teens in trouble because of the cost), and unlimited picture messaging if you have a camera phone. And with no contract or credit check, they shouldn't be too worried about breaking a contract and paying a fee or having a black mark on their credit record.
Now for the phone itself, do you need something that works or do you need something that is flashy and that will impress everyone at school? That may also affect their decision. If you want a cell phone really bad, take one of the lesser expensive ones because after all, you want a cell phone to talk and not to show off right?

Prepaid is the way to go!
That way if you are irresponsible and blow all your minutes by yakking too much, your phone shuts off until you buy more minutes. Your parents will never be stuck with a big cell phone bill.
I recommend T-mobile. For an initial $150, you get a phone and 1000 minutes of air time that last 1 year. Free long distance and no roaming as long as you are on their national network.

Get a part time job and get a prepaid phone...I hear Virgin Mobile phones are great for teens. There is no contract. To get post paid cellular service, you have to be 18 to get your own account. Your parents maybe afraid to add you to their account because you may go over the minutes, download tons of games, ringers..etc...prepaid is the way to go for a teenager.

Tell them you're responsible and a cell phone would help you gain responsibility. But don't abuse the privilige or you won't get anything else.

Have them get you a prepaid like tracfone. Show them that you can be responsible for your minutes. Have an agreement as for how many minutes you will be bought each month, and any extra you pay for yourself.
