Natural Birth.

I think that most of the advice you hear will be to go natural. Let me try to put some balance in. I am speaking as a husband whose wife had our first son via C-section and our second son vaginally. I was there for both (the C-section was done after non-emergency complications during a vaginal birth and so I was allowed to scrub and suit up).

First, let me say that in the long term, I have noticed no difference in the bonding that my wife and I had to our first baby and to our second. You may feel that the experience of natural childbirth will enhance your life but (assuming there are no permanent consequences of the method you choose) I don't think your feelings toward your child will be any different.

Speaking of permanent consequences, you need to talk to your Ob-Gyn. If there are indications that the pregnancy or birth could have complications that a C-section could resolve, I would not hesitate to go that route. Natural childbirth is stressful on you and your child and that stress can still harm either or both of you.

Here, let me note that as far as safety, you should take statistics with a grain of salt. C-sections are often done as emergency procedures and, as with any emergency procedures, there are a higher rate of complications.

So, if your Ob-Gyn says it's your decision, what are the pros and cons. Natural childbirth feels far more natural, even with an epidural. You will be more aware of things. You will be able to watch the birth. You will be able to hold your baby sooner and longer. On the downside, natural childbirth is far more painful, largely due to the fact that they won't do a C-section without giving you an epidural but they'll be glad to let you suffer naturally. Personally, I would ask for drugs as soon as I checked in. Recovery is easier when the childbirth is smooth but harder if they have to do an episiotomy (which is very common). Lastly, natural childbirth is unpredictable and can take forever.

C-sections, and here I'm talking about scheduled C-sections rather than emergency C-sections, are above all convenient. They prep you, drug you, cut you, close you and you're done. The downside is that it's done in a sterile looking operating room rather than a comfy looking birthing center. They put a screen up so that you can't see what's going on even if you wanted to. The baby will be cleaned, assessed, and wrapped before you get to see it and you won't be able to hold it immediately.

From the father's perspective, natural childbirth seemed better. I was with my wife the whole time, I got to watch the baby's head and body emerge (not an entirely pleasant site), and I got to cut the umbilical cord (it's surprisingly tough). On the other hand, C-section seemed easier and I'll never forget our Ob-Gyn's words "hey Dave, you want to see your wife's uterus?" (they take it all the way out before they sew everything back up and, trust me, the answer should have been "no, I just ate").

Again, I would recommend that you listen to your Ob-Gyn if there is any problem with the pregnancy or the birth. Other than that, the key is, don't be pushed into a decision and don't regret your decision. Either option might be right for you.

Good luck.

I had a C-section because I couldn't dialate past 5cm. Now I was extremely relieved when they gave me the epidural but it wore off a lot because my daughter was to high up. When they came in to give me the medicine for the C-Section I didn't feel a thing from my neck down so I was REALLY smiling. The birth is less painful and tramatic but the recovery is worse. You will be layed up for at least 2 weeks after a C-Section. That is the only downside. Natural birth you are raring to go in a few days.

A C section is painless when it's performed, but it's like having a hysterectomy. It's abdominal surgery and they cut your abdominal muscles. You lose tone and it takes weeks to recover. A natural birth hurts some when you deliver, but in the long run, you feel great immediately afterward. Just a little sore at the site for a few days, but otherwise back to normal in a week. I'd have the natural childbirth if you can. C-sections are for high risk deliveries only in my mind.

Natural birth is always better. Ideally, a c-section should only be used in an emergency situation. I know that in America 25% of all births are c-sections and this number is actually higher than it should be but you have doctors worried about lawsuits and women afraid of labor and delivery.

If you are healthy enough to go through with it, it would be best for you to go through with natural labor and delivery.

Best of luck.

C-secetion numbers are much higher than the afore mentioned 25%. The reason for this has been attributed to Doctors turning child birth into a medical procedure.

If you have any questions about natural child birth read Ina May's guide to childbirth. An amazing book.

With a natural birth you are up and moving a lot sooner than with a c-section. You don't have to heal from a major surgery and your body can bounce back sooner. I was happy to have had natural births.
