Can I assume this is for a woman?
If so, and you are crafty, make a piece of jewelry yourself. Get silver wire, swarovski crystals, a clasp, and some good pliers and make away. There's an awesome jewelry site of handcrafted stuff at sweetpinejewelry.com that is priced very reasonably.
Or you can go to one of those places where you pick out a pot (or mug or plate, etc) and paint it yourself. That way, it's made for the recipient in mind, and guaranteed to be a pleaser because the recipient will know right away how much thought went into it.

Your question is in the toys category, so I'm presuming your buying for a young audience. Age and gender are necessary for a really good fit, but I bought my nephews the Robo-raptor from Wowwee. It is the only thing they have consistently asked for. Since it came out last year, it is not difficult to acquire from Wal-Mart or ebay for a decent price (around $60).

I vote for making them an amazing meal, and if you are not up to the cooking challenge, then try getting them something else that is obviously impermanent, I like that as a strong theme for gifts. Something besides food would be insense, tickets to something/travel, or maybe you could recite some lyrics you like if you wish!

i think a give is not that necessary because Christmas is about the family and heart, so maybe you can give them a hug or some thing?
