I got rid of TV completely in early 90s while in the Peace Corp (even though I had electricity and could have had one) for 2 1/2 years. I was never addicted to it in the first place but after that when I returned to the US I became increasingly addicted to it. I don't think it is good, at least for me, to completely remove something like that. Better to replace it and utilize occassionally as one desires. Many people will develop addictions for things that are forbidden whereas would not do so if they have access and it is not considered forbidden.

I cut down the time that the television can be on. I allow my son to watch television during the week for 1 hour.

When our daughter was younger we didn't get rid of our TV but we did set up limits for viewing time.
We only watched TV a total of 90 minutes a day.
We also had 2 nights of the week when there was no TV at all....Tuesdays and Wednesday.
On our no-TV nights we played games, we talked, we read, we went for walks, listening to music....whatever we wanted to do that didn't involve turning on the TV

A lot of times we just don't turn the TV on for a while and spend time together in the livingroom. These are some of the best times.

When I was little, me and my siblings would all watch a lot of TV. My parents were sick and tired of it, so they cut the cable. After it was gone, we had like 5 channels and watched very little TV so it made a HUGE difference. And we started eating meals as a family.
