Mathematics is being used in Cricket for the following:

1) To find out Batting Average : The total number of runs divided by the total number of innings in which the batsman was out. Ave = Runs/[I - NO] (also (Av'ge).)

2) To decide Strike Rate : The number of runs scored per 100 balls faced. (SR = [100 * Runs]/BF)

3) Bowling Average : The average number of runs conceded per wicket. (Ave = Runs/W)

4) Economy Rate : The average number of runs conceded per over. (Econ = 6 * Runs/Balls)

5) To apply D/L Method: The D/L method was devised by two statisticians, Frank Duckworth and Tony Lewis in 1998, and has been adopted by the International Cricket Council as the standard method of calculating target scores in shortened one-day matches.

Previous methods used to achieve the same task included the use of run-rate ratios, the use of the score that the first team had achieved at the same point in their innings, and the use of targets derived by totalling the best scoring overs in the initial innings.

All of these methods have flaws that are easily exploitable. Run-rate ratios, for example, do not account for how many wickets the team batting second have lost, but simply reflect how quickly they were scoring at the point the match was interrupted. Thus if a team felt a rain stoppage was likely, they could attempt to force the scoring rate without regard for the corresponding highly likely loss of wickets, skewing the comparison with the first team. The other methods have similar flaws; these flaws are not present, or at least effectively normalized, by the D/L method.

Run rate=score/number of overs.
batsman strike rate=his score/number of balls(delveries)he received
bowler srike rate=number of balls bowled/number of wickets taken.
bwler economy rate=number of runs scored off his bowling/number of overs bowled
Nobody cares about toss probability.
