There are no airports in Cozumel, and even if one were located there, you need to take a ferry, which takes you a looong time. You'll need to land on Cancun, and then go either by bus or shuttle:

shuttle? www.cancunshuttle.com

bus? www.ticketbus.com.mx

Ok. If you want to rent a car you can get it from the several intl companies like budget or alamo. Those rental companies are located at the airport, so you won't have a hard time renting one.

Went there in 05. Had a blast. We flew into Cancun which is an international airport. And we rented a car from National. It was bare bones, at least it had air. They drive crazy over there and don't stray too far from the main drag down to Play Del Carmen. Cozumel is just an island off the coast so from there you would have to take a ferry to the mainland. Hope you have a wonderful time. Oh, another tidbit of info that might help, never pay full price for anything from the vendors/stores. Always start at 1/2 or below and haggle with them. It's amazing what miracles they can do with their price. Don't be afraid to walk away.

Playa Del Carmen is around 1/2hr-45 minute drive from Cancun. and Cozumel (which has an airport) is on a little Island across from Playa. You can ferry across from Playa (but not with your car). Both airports have car rentals. I highly recommend you read the "tips" on renting a vehicle in Mexico...I have heard some nightmare stories! Parking in all 3 cities will be a challenge.
Taxies are very safe to take and all the prices are set so you don't have to have the fear of being ripped off. There are check points between Playa and Cancun that they have to report to...cab business is very regulated.
Have fun
PS- you couldn't pay me to drive on Mexican highways!

Depending on what you want to do. I recomend that you check the weather in the mid atlantic and caribbean for storms before getting here, otherwise the weather can be really nice, not as hot as in the summer months, and there is always things to do, If you are planning to come this way and are looking for good deals, you can e-mail me (I live in the quiet village of Puerto Morelos,15 min. soutth of Cancun airport) at mireysol_2000@yahoo,com. and my name is francisco. By the way Playa del Carmen is now as busy or more as Cancun 20 years ago.
