Cars that are not driven much must go by time, NOT mileage. Your owner's manual should spell it out pretty clearly. If it says "5,000 miles or 5 months, whichever comes first" then that's what you go with.

With synthetics you CAN get a bit of extra service without much worry, but that's really only if you run out of miles before you run out of time. That said, during the warranty period ALWAYS change the oil according to the manufacturer's recommendations whether you use synthetic or not.

Synthetic oils don't oxidize as quickly as convetional oils. They also do a better job of nutralizing harmful chemicals that result for the combustion process.

I have always gone by mileage instead of months when using a synthetic oil.

You can research synthetics at www.amsoil.com and come to your own conclusions on what you'd like to do. Worse case senerio, you could always change your filter every 3 months, and top your oil back off, then change the oil and the filter when you reach the mileage. I do that because I use an oil good for 1 yr or 35K miles. I go purely by mileage and I change the filter every 3K to 5K miles. I put about 5K on my car every 3 months.

If it hasn't been driven much I would go by the mileage ... I would check the oil first and as long as it's NOT dark brown or black then I wouldn't worry. Also, synthetic oil is best for your car so I think it's all right.

My Nissan has an oil change interval of 3,750 miles according to the owners manual. I use synthetic oil and I barely make that 3,750 miles in one year of driving. I always change it at the factory interval.

Yes I know synthetic oil is supposed to last longer but the simple fact is, it gets dirty just as fast as conventional oil and that is the reason the oil should be changed.

oil changes based on time is due to people doing short trips and building up contaminates in the oil
it will depend on your driving habits,if you drive lots of short trips then go to 3 month changes and if you drive long trips but seldom then you could extend this time
if you are only driving the car a little then maybe you should just use regular oil and save some money, unless the car calls for synthetic
