my cdrom does not open so icannot reboot the startup disk. When i see the sound icon on the task bar it is grayed out. What about going into BIOS i beleive this helped me before , but i forgot what to do. thanks

install XP. it has a default audio driver in it.
If problem exists, buy an external sound card

Ok, first the CDROM, Right click on Start, choose Explore from the list. Windows Explorer will pop up, right click on your CDROM drive and choose Eject, the drawer should open. If that doesn't happen, there is sometimes a little hole below the CDROM drawer, stick a paper clip in and it will open. Second, try doing a Windows Restore. Click on Start, All Programs, Accessories, System Tools. It is the last item listed. Windows takes snapshots of good configurations periodically in case of situations like this. It has a wizard that will walk you through it. Do this before reinstalling Windows. Reinstall Windows as a last resort. Best of luck.
