The basic difference is that a calanque is the remnant of a prehistoric river mouth, while a fjord is the remnant of a glaciated valley. However, this is also a similarity, in a sense, because a glacier can be likened to a river of ice. A glacier causes harsher erosion than a river, so a fjord is deeper than a calanque. That is to say, although the heights of the cliffs alongside calanques and fjords are comparable, the bottom of a fjord is far enough below sea level for a boat with a deep draft to safely navigate. Also, calanques are traditionally found on the Mediterranean due to changes experienced by that basin over the last few million years, while fjords are found in a wide variety of locales, including Norway, Iceland, Greenland, New Zealand, Alaska, coastal Canada (both eastern and western), and Chile. The Norwegian fjords are the most famous.
