My hubby and I are visiting Jamaica-Montego Bay. I have heard the people are fabulous and food is awesome but there is a high crime rate. I was told not to wear too much jewellery.
I also wanted to know how do people dress in the evenings for dinner and what are the good places to eat?

If you really want to visit Jamaica do not let anyone discourage you. I am a Jamaica and I will be the first to tell you that my country is great. It has wonderful beaches, food, nightlife and a wide variety of activities for you and your spouse to partake in. I can't tell you there is no crime here, because there is, but so does every other country in the world. There are no special precautions to take, just be smart. The same way you would dress in you homeland, you can do it here (except for winter coats of course). Contrary to what many people think, Jamaican are not into stealing tourist's jewellry as you will see that we are always decked out in our own. The locals are really friendly to the tourists because they are used to having them around especially in Montego Bay. Just have an open mind coming here because there is lots to do and see. Enjoy.

Ignore the first two responses. Have those ppl been to Jamaica? Like Dennis said evil finds evil. We went to Negril last summer and only found good ppl. You go w/an open mind and a desire to experience and respect their culture and you will find the best time. We went a group of friends last year but we loved it and found it so laid back that we are going again this summer w/our young children.
Just use common sense that you would use travling to any city, New York has a worse crime rate as does LA. So just don't go flashing money, and you will be all right.
As for dress dressy casual...is the way to go. My hubby got away w/ a light button down shirt untucked, and some dickie pants. I would wear just a nice dress or slacks. Nothing that to dressy. Just be comfortable, have an open mind. Jamaicans are actually quite fun!!!

Get the book Lonely Planet Jamaica and read it . It tells the good , bad and ugly of Jamaica . My wife and I went to Negril this year and it was the best vacation we have ever had . Imagine if you were living in Jamaica and wanted to visit the US . How much frightening info could you get about visiting some place like NY or LA . We found Jamaica and their people wonderful

It takes evil to know evil. First of all if you want to visit somewhere just go with an open mind, just look on the bright side. If you go with fear you'll always be afraid.
Crime is everywhere, isn't there more crimes in the U.S. than in Jamaica, and still yet everyone wants to go there.
Just wear what you feel comfortable wearing.

Just like any other country there is crime you just have to be street smart don't go venturing into areas that you are not familiar with at nights, dress the way you normally would when going out for dinner , go with an open mind and don't forget to try our rum punch it will knock your socks off ...enjoy!

Don't know Jamaica much but come over here to Nevis, a small peaceful quiet island where there is far less violence than Jamaica. You can take a day trip, with an "island hopper" plane...get at airport, should be an inexpensive trip. Take a "taxi tour" here and enjoy the quiet, outsite Charlestown. Also the sister island of St. Kitts but more violence there
And yes the people in the islands here are fabulous..none of that reverse racism/hate you see in the US. The pace is very relaxed which is good is some ways but when you are used to the fast pace in the US remember that you will usually have quite a wait in comparison to Us like for example in restaurants. Check out their culture a head of time to avoid problems but in the whole they are a lot nicer than most people in the US
Dress is usually very casual, but don't go walking around Charlestown in your bikini...you will stand out liek you would do so in any US downtown. Food varies. Don't know Jamaica but most food here inj Nevis is fair unless you go to better restaurants and pay a premium. But then they have to pay more for food here...shipping costs. Stop in Wendy's Deli if you come to Nevis for an excellent lunch and try the Chicken Rotti, a West Indies treats. Also good I have heard is Mingles, chevi's and I have heard of course anything at 4 seasons...but very expensive there.
