You probably installed third party software that replaced the Windows native decoder. Please download & run this utility from Microsoft to show you which decoders are present on your system.

The utility will also tell you which are compatable with your Windows & allows you to choose a default decoder.

You can also download devoders from Microsoft
If this fails & you were previously able to play DVDs you may have to resort to a system restore.

The new windows media player version 11, requires an decoder for DVD playback. Try going back to version 10 of wmp. If that's your case

Depending on the Codec it wants to use a decoder you can usually get them for free.

Typically when you get this error message, you can click the message to find out what decoder it wants, then there is also usually and option to go find it now. Which will take you to a site that you are able to download from.

your system needs the decoder, in order to read the DVD, and to format it also to copy it, that's all you need.
