The mail is delivered on Saturdays too. Is it a walking route or a driven route? Are you ready to walk in snow and rain on a Saturday? Or drive in the snow along the shoulder of a frozen road? Doesn't sound like much fun to me. Not to mention, not having anyone to really talk to while your packing that big ol' bag while being chased by the neighborhood dogs. Just my opinion.
But hey, from what I understand with talking with my postal carrier, they get compensated quite well for all they endure.

No, its not possible to work just Monday-Friday until you have many years in as a Letter Carrier. Letter Carriers start out as Part-Time Flexibles. As a PTF I worked every hour of the day and every day of the year. The job can be enjoyable because a lot of your work is done outside, independent of a boss. Salary is about $44,000.

Yes, you should definitely join your Union. I have been in the APWU for over 25 years. Yes, the Union will represent you in the case of any job action. Being in the Union has no bearing on your Seniority. The thing that bothers me though, is that the person recruiting you was not clear about things. Such as the Dental thing. Almost all of the Health Insurance carriers have Dental included. There are supplemental plans that are completely optional.

It would depend on the schedule that you were given on how many Saturdays you would have to work but you would definitely have to work them. Yes the job pays well but as far as fun goes that would be up to you. There is a lot of walking in all kinds of weather and a lot of lifting. If that is fun for you than yes you will have fun being a mail carrier.

The post office has positions that work 7 days a week.
Just because there is no Sunday delivery does not mean they are not working.
Your 2 days off weekly rotate. Ask your postal carrier and he/she will explain it to you.
To me, it looks like a tough job until you get enough seniority to ride around in the little trucks and pick and choose your time off.

Saturdays are part of the job, but so are all the government holidays...
Fun job? I guess it could be.
Pays well? I think it does pay fairly well and you are a government employee which has tons of benefits (medical, sick, vacation, retirement, etc.).
I don't think it is a very easy job to get... because of all the people that want the job.

Yes, you would have to work Saturdays, and holidays, and all the days that nobody wants to work.
Also you often have to work split shifts (meaning you come in early in the morning, then have about a 5 hour lunch, and then come back --- often you will have 16 hours of your day tied up and not even get 8 paid hours).
Also, it is a sucky job. You have to lug around about 35 lbs of mail with you as you walk around you town, in the freezing cold and the blistering heat. The customers are rude, and whenever something they are expecting doesn't come, somehow it is your fault (you personally, not the USPS in general). Oh, and I swear there is something in the material used in Postal uniforms that makes dogs want to attack you.
The USPS has a higher turnover rate than McDonalds for a reason.
