Electronic air cleaner in your central heating furnace. Do a duct cleaning by a professional before installing it. Install fine white felts in all the air outlets for a month.
Keep the electronic air cleaner clean by washing the filter in the dishwasher. It must be the metal variety. Look for it.
Keep the windows closed especially in summer. The lawn mower and the blower that these contractors use kick up a lot of dust.
It is not so bad in winter because of all that snow, ice and rain. But you should keep the duct clean, this is the key. The furnace circulates the dust.
After all this, Your dust is still not out but it is reduced way down by about 80%.

Use dust clothes to wipe horizontal surfaces. Change or rinse frequently. Start with surfaces closest to the ceiling (picture frames, light fixtures, etc.) as dust will filter downward. Once all surfaces have been wiped off, wait about an hour or so to allow airborn dust to resettle. (If you're a total fanatic, or if you have health concerns, you could re-wipe everything) then vacuum slowly and methodically to remove what's on the floor. (The old-fashioned way of hanging carpeting on a clothesline & beating it with a tennis racquet is probably a lot more thorough than your standard Hoover, but that's out if you have wall-to-wall.)
Finally, and this might seem weird, but hey... exfoliate. A huge percentage of common household dust is sloughed off human skin. That's what all them pesky dustmites is dinin' on. At the end of every shower, gently scrub yourself with any exfoliant (I use loofah mitts. I've also mixed sugar into my bodywash & scrubbed gently with that. Doesn't screw w/the pipes) Good luck!

There is an electro-static unit that you can attach to your heating system to reduce dust, but it's not perfect. The stuff that does land I have heard is mostly dry skin? Ew... I use those Swiffer Dusting Wands to get the dust up and out of here--I love them! Have you seen the commercials where the woman dances and dusts? It's true.......and I hate dusting......

Sharper Image probably has the best air cleaner. I have one and it's reduced my dust dramatically. You may want to get more than one, depending on the size of your house.

Pledge and a rag. Pledge is a brand name of duster. I spray it on the wood (ONLY WOOD AND PLASTIC, ABSOLUTELY NO METAL!!!) and and rub it in with a rag. For metal, just a damp or dry rag will work.
