you keep control of your own orders and amount of work, if you don't like to do something you turn down the order
you set your own prices
you decide your own working times, no one forces you to get up at 7 am if you prefer to work at night
you can decide to do the thing that you like and make a living off it
no annoying coworkers and harassment on the working place
you can work wherever you want, you can customize your working place and tools

disadvantages:
if you can't organise yourself enough work, you'll starve
no one will offer you any social security, you'll have to take care of it yourself
it's a big responsibility, having to take care of all the papers yourself, and making sure you have enough money to buy materials and pay off workers, if you have any
you have to be very careful with your schedule, because you must finish the orders to the set date
it can be very lonely, time to time
....

there's more, but i can't think of it right now.

Disadvantage, competition. you have to keep up with what is new. Then again, that is the nature of business big or small

We owned our own Family Entertainment Center. One of the pro's is low overhead. If you are the only employee, you don't have to pay for workman's comp insurance. Also, no payroll. Disadvantages are that you don't get a "day off". Even after hours or on days you are closed, there is plenty to do. Also, the public can be very fickle. Really research your demographic.

Good Luck!!

I guess you would be able to answer that yourself once you get to know what you want to start, once you know what you want then you do a survey around town to see what your competition is and their pricing, by then you would know your own advantage and disadvantage, all the best.
