Engineers always try to think ahead of the national learning curve. NASA spent hundreds of millions of dollars developing a pen that worked in 0-g (no gravity) situations…while the Russians just used a pencil.
Engineers…we can be short sighted at times…

I think it is the same reason that we have a seedless watermelon yet no true cure for cancer.
Priorities.
My personal favorite is the state that spends $28 million expanding a roadway while children are being abducted, raped and killed by previous sex offenders and the excuse is, "the department is seriously underfunded and we can't track them all."
Shameful.
