Car battery should last at least 5-6 years, sometimes more.

It really depends on the quality of the car battery. You buy cheap, you get cheap.
These days the minimum duration a car battery should last is 1 years. Most automotive batteries come with a warranty of 1 year free replacement and the remaining 2 years are pro-rated based on time. Typically this means the manufacturer expects this battery to last you 3 years.
However lead acid batteries have gotten a lot better, and many manufacturers are willing to offer 4 and 5 year warranties with longer policies on free replacement. (ie you can get a 5 year warranty with 2 years free replacement and the remaining 3 pro-rated). In this case the manufacturer expects the battery to last a minimum of 2 years and should last for 5 years.
Purchasing a high quality battery will last longer, a cheap battery shorter. It's all a matter of the quality of the battery you purchase.

Car batteries are generally sold with a month rating applier to them, 36, 48, 60, month, etc. This figure is a pro-rated warranty applied to the battery. This doesn't mean how long they will last, but can be used as a guide as they will usually outlast the warranty.
There are other variables that can effect the life of a battery. Weather conditions, applied load, condition of vehicle charging system, etc.
Generally, the more expensive, longer life batteries will last longer than a cheap battery.

Most of the previous answers have answered the question. Battery service depends on the number of plates in the battery, type of grid pattern, material they are made from and if it is a sealed battery which most are now. Even though a battery may be classified as sealed you still should be able to check the level of liquid in the cells. Should they be low, they need to be topped off. This is usually just about the plate level. Make sure you check your battery and clean any corrison you may find on or near the terminal areas and keep the battery case clean.

Hard to say.
Most batteries last a few years - five is a good average before you start noticing problems.
But you do have to take into consideration routine maintenance, usage, and weather conditions. Plus if you're a person prone to leave your lights on, use interior lighting with the car off or have the doors open - this drains the battery and will also decrease the lifespan overtime.

There is no know way to know for sure. How every most stores will sell you a battery designed to last 24 months or 36 month, etc. It depend on us, charging system condition, weather, cleanleness, etc.
