Honestly speaking I would say that some will indeed. It will be tragic and insensitive if they do, but there are insensitive people on both sides of the political spectrum. I am an independent conservative and I have to say that if he is unable to continue that the Governor of South Dakota should appoint a Democrat to properly reflect the will of the people in the state.
tangerine: Cheney will be President Pro Tem in the Senate no matter which party is in power. This is one of the duties of the Vice President and is not effected by who holds the majority.

What's happening to Sen Johnson is absolutely horrible. As a conservative, I certainly won't be "gloating" over his misfortune. I wish him the best and hope he recovers.

I don't think most republican think that way how do you take pleasure in someone's misfortune. I think most republican are fair minded people that's why not one of them contested any election results even though they could, because some of them were won by a few hundred votes

I will not gloat and I will be sad. I knew Paul Wellstone on a personal basis, even though he and I disagreed on too many issues. I never voted for him, but I did like him. He was a good man, and I miss him. I always am sad for others in pain.
I pray for those who need prayers, even my enemies.

No, it would be bittersweet. I don't wish Senator Johnson ill, but I also think it would bode well for Republicans if something happened.
I wish...I wasn't so conflicted about it. I'll pray for him, of course, and that whatever happens, it's God's will.
But something bad happening to him would be a HORRIBLE way for Republicans to regain control of the Senate. I don't think anyone wants that.

Publicly, no. In back rooms, some will. But not all republicans are like that, just as not all Democcrats are like that. There are republicans who will see this for what it is. An unfortunate accident hat may or may not turn out in their favor. But I doubt all of them will be throwing a party.

Not the mature people anyway.
Actually, the media is stirring up this speculation. Maybe they are performing a public service, or maybe they are just doing what they always do - following the ghoulish angle of stories because they believe the public demands it, irrespective of political party.

There is no rejoicing in someones misfortune. I hope he's
OK. I wonder though, will the Democrats force him to retain his seat in the Senate even if it jeopardizes his health further.

I'm sure they'll be happy that Republicans regain control, but i can't imagine anyone being happy over his (possible) demise. That would just be sick, and even though I am not Republican, I can't believe most people would be so cruel.
