They try to escape to a parallel universe sock-heaven. Sometimes they just go for a holiday - have you noticed how one will disappear, then come back a slightly different colour two weeks later? Then, sometimes there is a malfunction in the time/space continuum, and they arrive back to the house next door, so you will find socks appearing which you've never seen before.
The sad thing is, though, that once separated, they are always searching for 'the one'; we have a responsibility to try to keep them together.

That is the job of the washing machine, to eat one sock out of each pair. Then if the washer misses, the drier picks up the slack by sucking the sock into the lint filter!

I use two strategies to combat this one. I safety pin all my own socks into pairs before they go into the wash in the first place. This is easy enough as I dress and undress in the same place every day and just leave the safety pin on the windowsill between times. I can't expect my kids to do this, so I have bought them each a dozen pairs of identical school socks. As long as they can find any two, they've got a pair. Do we lose any? Probably, but we don't notice.

They go to another space and/or time, it's called quantum mechanics.
The best way to deal with this is to put the odd sock in a special drawer. Eventually, another sock will disappear, leaving another odd sock. This can then be paired up with the sock in the special drawer. Presto! No odd socks.
The alternative would be for socks to be sold in threes.

It's the sock elves, they hide them. I'm not even joking. They like wet socks, once they are dry they put them back in the washing machine so they dye your clothes or in my case appear in my housemates boxers. I've seen them at it, little blighters. Begging them to stop makes them worse, they start doing it to all your socks so you only end up with odd ones! But shhhh... don't tell anyone I let their secret out, they might tell the knicker gnomes and then I'd be out of undies too.

Because if a pair of socks went missing you wouldn't notice it and if no socks went missing there would be no problem. Have you noticed it is always your favourite pair.
