Do you mean from a biological sense, or in a social sense, or even in a philosophical sense. Biologically, we are attracted to the opposite sex, for one purpose, and this is accomplished through the hormones that exist in each of us. Now, one could also say that similaries are what attract people to one another, to form groups. It's when you have something in common with someone else that you become interested in them, either as friends, or as a relationship, or as a community. Personally, I would say that it is our souls and destiny that brings certain people together. It's like an invisible magnet that lives in each of us that attracts us to the people tha we are involved with throughout our lives. Some we attract becuase they are so much like ourselves, and we form coalitions with folks like us, but ofter times we find ourselves attracted to others that seem to be the opposite of what we are. Psychologically it is determined that we become attracted to things either to reenforce a strength that we already have or to strengthen a weakness we have. We are attracted to the homogenous becuase of comfort and security, because it is like us we understand it, are familiar with it and trust it. Like binds together to unify for a common goal or cause. The opposites that attract are done in order to understand that which we are not familiar with, to gain a deeper understanding and knowledge. Often time, we need it to balance ourselves out.
These are just a few thoughts on the subject, but i dont think there is just one single answer to your question. It depends if you view it more from the scientific side, or if you view it from the philosophical or religious side.
