I have some old veneer furniture that is looking pretty rough. You know the kind, it's cream with timy strips of gold and has gold accents and handles. Late '60's, early '70's. I have tried cleaning it, but my great-grandmother was a smoker and it is very stained and miscolored. I am too scared to use any really strong cleaner on it, because I am worried it will ruin it. Someone suggested bleach paste, any experience with that? I will not get rid of it because of who's it was and it has been reinforced and is very sturdy. Can I paint it?

Yes you can paint it. A good cleaning with a mild detergent or tri-sodium phosphate will do wonders before sanding. Use gloves and eye protection if you use the TSP because it will burn if you have open sores or cuts.

Use a fine steel wool or 220 grit sand paper to rough the surface prior to painting. Be very careful not to be too aggresive with the sanding, as the veneer is very thin. Make sure you prime it, sand with the 220 after, then paint. Good luck.

Go w/ tim R.
You can take it a step further by using auto primer, nitro paste for dings & auto paint.
Use the sanding primer & spotting putty as if it was a car fender.
I used a spraygun, but a good spraycan works well.
Once painted & well dried use auto polishing compound to rub it out.
Bonus is , the auto paint is very durable & if you mess up, you can sand down the imperfections & repaint.
