You probably need to reset the Ipod if you can't get it to turn off.

Apple's website recommends this solution to reset the Ipod...
1. Toggle the Hold switch on and off. (Slide it to Hold, then turn it off again.)
2. Press and hold the Menu and Center (Select) buttons until the Apple logo appears, about 6 to 10 seconds. You may need to repeat this step.

Hold the stop button for about 4 seconds or so... if still not working, check with your Mac store (or wherever you got your ipod). In any case, it turns off itself after a certain time w/o playing anything and touching any buttons...

I've had that problem before after disconnecting it from my comp. All I do is reconnect it, boot up iTunes, and disconnect it properly, then I'm able to turn it off. Try that.
