They detect the LH hormone surge that your body releases just before ovulation.

The kits you get from the stores have about 5-7 tests in them, and you start peeing on one test a day at about your 12-13th day of your cycle. Its easy to miss the day you ovulate, because most woman have cycles that dont fit into the 28 day, 14th day ovulation average.

Its easier of you just buy some ovulation test strips from a medical wholesaler on ebay (50 for 20 bucks) and pee on one EVERY DAY of your cycle for two cycles. THen you will know when you're ovulating for sure.

Thats what I did. Works like a charm.

Once you get the positive result on the ovulation test, it means that your body is ripening and preparing to release and egg within the next 12-24 hours, and you should have sex within the next 24-36 hours (the egg is only viable for about 24-36 hours, and then it can no longer be fertalized).
