do you say anything or just keep walking out the door? Do you feel sorta guilty, or do you feel happy that you got something for free?

we just got 7 packs of camels for 11 bucks. We had to go back in and tell her. Just a hint, it is tough to stay sober without being honest. Some days it sucks. lol.

This happened to me, not all that long ago, in a supermarket. Turned out the item she forgot to ring up had a security label on it (not for its value, but, apparently, for inventory reasons), and when I went through the door of the store, the alarm went off. The manager took me into his office, looked at my register receipt, didn't see the item on it, and accused me of shoplifting. The cashier was of no help. She was slammed busy and couldn't remember even seeing the item. The cops were called, even after I offered to pay for the item. I got a ticket for shoplifting (a misdemeanor!!!), had to go to court, and it ended up costing me over $400 in court fees. All this hassle and money (and embarrassment) for an item that cost less than $2....and I was banned from ever shopping there again, as well. I am a grown woman, who has never even gotten a parking ticket her whole life! I was mortified. I'm not kidding.

DO NOT WALK OUT WITH AN ITEM YOU HAVE NOT PAID FOR. Even if what happened to me doesn't happen to you, in many stores, the cashier will have to pay for the item, when her/his cash drawer comes up short at the end of the day. Same with restaurants. I work as a cocktail waitress in a country club, and if someone walks out without paying, I have to make good on their bill at the end of the day/night. This is pretty standard in the restaurant/bar business. I don't think customers realize this.

You may think you've gotten away with something....but...believe me, somebody, somewhere, is going to pay for it - and it's usually a person who can least afford to. Just take the high road and go back and tell whoever that the item wasn't rung up - and pay for it BEFORE you leave the place.

It depends on my mood. One time I was shopping with my mom and sister, we were looking for dresses to wear to my aunt's wedding, and the lady forgot to ring up one of the dresses. We didn't say anything just left the store. We ended up with a fifty dollar dress for free. I felt kind of guilty later, but I wasn't going to go back and get charged for it. Karma will get me for sure.

For me…everything is dependent on the cashier. If she is rude, not polite, talking to everyone else but me -- then I don’t say anything. If she is just a little friendly- or appears to be having a rough day – then I say something.
I have never experienced guilt using my method.

I think there is an order to this world. If I didn't pay for the free item, a bird would crap on my car or something.

That statement about being sober is hilarious.

I tell the checker, if by chance I miss the check and notice it later I go back to tell them

you should say something if the cashier is nice to you... if they are mean then dont say anything because the cashier will get in troble when they count up all of the store stock, and all of the reciepts that they have, and notice that something is unaccounted for

I usually don't notice until I get home and that's IF I check my receipt, but if they didn't charge me I take it back and pay for it. It's the right thing to do.
