Die Hard totally reinvented what an action movie is...for years after it came out you heard people make "Die Hard" comarisons...ie. Die Hard on a plane..Die hard on a Bus..and so on

Lots of movies have great action SCENES, but they need something extra to make the time in between the money shots entertaining as well.
True Lies
Great action sequences with lots of comedy thrown in. Arnie is almost playing a parody of himself.
Aliens
Who didn't want to be a Space Marine after seeing this? Add in sci-fi elements, backstabbing, most of the main characters actually dying, the horror atmosphere and catchphrase of the year "Game Over, Man!" and you've got a winning action movie.
Radiers of the Lost Ark
No explanation needed.

Three of my absolute favorites are Gladiator, True Lies, and Terminator 2.
Too many movies these days are so fake and it just ruins it. I love those 3 that i mentioned though.
Gladiator:
Russell Crowe played an Army general (Maximus) during the Roman Empire and the King was dying and told him he wanted Maximus to take over the Empire and give it back to the people. The King's son heard of this and he killed his dad making himself the new King. He has Maximus arrested and sent to be killed, but he escaped and became a slave who had to fight his way back in arena fights where he earned the respect of his peers and ended up killing the King's son in a battle. He then gave the Empire back to the people as a Government before dying and going to see his murdered wife and son in Heaven. It always makes me cry at the end.

It would have to be the Terminator movies. I thought the story, characters, actors and the action was the best. And I am not an action movie fan, but the phrase that Arnold (now the "governator") said, "I'll be back"...well I just thought it was very humorous.

i could could desire to declare the matrix is the ideal I even have ever seen, plenty combating and positively mind-blowing combating scenes to be real. The action by no potential stops, and retains you on the edge of your seat.

Gladiator with russell crowe. that is the most action packed, bloody, intense show, and yet the story was sooo good! i was on the edge of my seat the whole time. it's also one of those shows you can watch more than once. alot of shows you can't do that.

die hard
it set the standard for action movies. it was set in modern times, the hero was a "regular guy", the villain was fantastically played, the action was incredible.
