I'm a Civil War buff and Gettysburg is at the top of my visit list. I haven't been able to yet but I plan to next year. How many days would you suggest spending there?

I've visited Gettysburg dozens of times and actually lived there for about a year. It's one of my favorite places on earth! I would highly recommend at least 3 days if you're a Civil War buff and really want to enjoy it. You'll want to start off with the visitor center and electric map to get oriented and then I would suggest taking the audio tour. All of that could take you a whole day. That'd give you 2 days to walk the battlefield, read some monuments, and do some exploring into particular aspects of the battle you're interested in.

I could go back to Gettysburg every year and never get tired of it and never see all there is to see. There are so many other things close to there too like Hanover (cavalry skirmishes), Cashtown, and all the historic markers on the different routes leading into town.

Are you going with anyone (wife, girlfriend,...)? If you're going with a non-Civil War buff they're probably going to lose interest after a day or two. If it's just you or you're going with other Civil War buffs, you could easily spend a week there if you really wanted to do some exploring. (You could spend a whole day just going through all the shops and book stores.)

Yes many times - OK only 6 or 7-
you should really allow one full day to explore the battlefield. there
re places to stay in town close to the battlefield that are reasonably priced. Obviously July 1,2,& 3 will be more crowded.
Gettysburg is still a real town that still goes about it's daily business and just happens to be next to one of the most important battlfields in world history.
A short drive from Gettysburg is Harpers Ferry
around 60 miles then it's 17 miles to antietam at sharpsburg MD and then another 60 miles back to Gettysburg.
when you visit the battlefield wear comfortable clothing and shoes you can climb rocky places in ,places like little and big round top and devils den.
enjoy

Visit the Jennie Wade House. She died cooking for the soldiers instead of taking cover in the cellar. She's a hero. The house still stands with the bullets house in it.
